Style Guide

That’s What She Said 2025/26 Style Guide

This is a very rough guide – take it as advice rather than the law!

The number one rule is never be afraid to submit your work. We welcome writers of any experience and ability and we have a great team of editors to offer whatever help you need along the way.

  • Article length: 700-900 words (can be negotiated with the editor).
  • Shorter, easier-to-read paragraphs are preferable for the online format.
  • Vary sentence lengths.
  • Link your sources!!! This is so important; otherwise, the editing process will be overly long and complicated with much more back and forth.
  • Before pitching, look through our website to see if your idea has not been published before. If it has, pitch it from a new angle or with new information.
Voice and Tone
  • It’s important to write with an intersectional feminist viewpoint. Our magazine aims to be as inclusive as possible and we want all our writing to reflect that.
  • This is not a uni essay!! Whilst coursework writing is great practice, try to avoid overcomplicated, academic style writing and lean towards a magazine style
  • Tone does not have to be formal and can be more conversational, but writing must be clear and easy to read.
  • Great when stories have a personal touch – even if it’s not about you or something you are involved in, make your writing passionate and strong.
